Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these medications should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
