Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
