PSG Defeats Marseille in a Shootout to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the season-opening trophy on fourteen different occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown between the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring early on.

Yet, Marseille fired twice late to take a shock lead. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital leveler in the dying moments to force the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all scored with composure for PSG to seal a 4-1 penalty win.

The record winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the last thirteen seasons.
