On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Leader

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Core Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
